Trametes versicolor, also known as Coriolus versicolor or Turkey Tail mushroom, has been found to contain over 35 different phenolic compounds including the popular flavonoid quercetin and two unique polysaccharopeptides called krestin (PSK) and polysaccharide peptide (PSP). These active compounds are thought to be responsible for turkey tail’s ability to quench inflammation, balance the immune response, promote healthy cellular differentiation and provide metabolic support.
Animal research has shown that turkey tail has antibacterial and antiviral properties, while also positively influencing metabolic function by significantly reducing blood sugar levels and improving insulin resistance. Human trials have demonstrated that turkey tail may inhibit the growth and spread of poorly differentiated cells through the actions of PSK and Coriolus versicolor glucan (CVG). A study of 91 women with a Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection found that 85% of those treated with a turkey tail-based vaginal gel had a normal pap smear and colposcopy 6 months after treatment, while only 64% of those who didn’t use the gel met this criteria. In addition, 60% of women treated were completely cleared of the virus compared to only 42% of those who weren’t.
Finally, turkey tail has been shown to have a beneficial impact on gut health as it contains naturally occurring prebiotics. One study found that turkey tail extract modified gut bacteria composition by increasing populations of beneficial bacteria like bifidobacterium and lactobacillus while reducing potentially harmful bacteria, such as clostridium, staphylococcus and salmonella. In fact, turkey tail has a similarly positive effect on the gut microbiome as treatment with prebiotic supplements.
